Bus not ‘Hijacked’

A 15-year-old is in trouble after he allegedly held a sign reading, “Hijacked, need help,” while sitting in the back of a GVT bus. A motorist saw it before 4pm Thursday and called 911. Officers from MC, GJ and CO responded & stopped the bus at Eastbrook and E 1/2 Road. The boy was issued a misdemeanor summons for false reporting and obstructing government operations. He was released to his parents. Today, he turns 16.

Helmick booked here

Miriam Helmick, 51, was booked into the MC Jail around 4pm Thursday, after her extradition from Jacksonville, Fla. Helmick will be advised today on many charges, including first-degree murder in the June 10 shooting death of her husband, Alan, in Whitewater.

Who’s your daddy?

Authorities on Thursday warned of a new scam reportedly making rounds in MC: People calling elderly residents, claiming to be their grandchildren, and in need of quick cash wired from a local store. Scammers typically ask their victims not to say anything to their “parents.”

GJ man involved in standoff

AP reported two people were jailed Wednesday after an attempt to arrest a GJ man led to a standoff lasting several hours in Poncha Springs, 4 miles W. of Salida. Chaffee County sheriff's deputies arrested 36-year-old David Todd Dawson early Wednesday on suspicion of resisting arrest, failure to leave, and more. Gerri Dawson was arrested for failure to leave. Deputies attempted to arrest David Dawson about 7:45pm Tuesday at Poncha Lodge for an alleged domestic violence incident, but he and the woman allegedly refused to come out of the motel.

Trailer theft

MC Crime Stoppers seeks help in the theft of a utility trailer from a parking lot at Mesa Mall between Nov. 4-7. The white 7X16-foot enclosed trailer was worth more than $4,000 and Colorado license plate number 254OCT. It was marked on both sides with the business decal “Theyson Builders LLC.” Tips: 241-7867.

A 17-year-old girl caused more than $1,000 in damage to a car in the neighborhood of GJHigh School, 5th and Glenwood. She was taken to the Division of Youth Corrections. Info: 244-3630.
