GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Money raised Saturday from the R-5 High School ski swap will pay for ACT tests for high school kids who cant afford the fee.
It will help pay for instructional items not covered by the schools regular budget.
The money will help with prom and graduation, and it will pay the annual student fees if a students family cant afford it.
Mostly it fuels the Joe Roscoe college scholarship, named for the first principal of one of Mesa Countys first alternative high schools.
At the ski swap, held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Park Barn, people will have their choice of all things ski or snowboard, including cross-country skiing.
Anything related to winter skiing and boarding will be available, including equipment and clothing, boots and socks, helmets and hats.
Vendors, including Grand Junctions Gene Taylors Sporting Goods, Loki, Summit Canyon Mountaineering, All Sports and more, will sell items.
Another vendor thats participated for 30 years is Aztec Ski Rental, a business that had been owned by Carmen Crone in Aztec, N.M. Crones mother had ties to R-5, said teacher and ski swap coordinator Mark Craddock.
Fifteen percent of the proceeds will benefit R-5.
The school typically raises between $3,500 and $4,000, Craddock said.
The R-5 ski swap was started only a year or two after the school opened in 1975, making it older than the Powderhorn ski swap, so its become a tradition, Craddock said.
R-5 does not accept donated items, Craddock said.
