Outstanding 2008 seasons by five Grand Valley softball players translated to all-state team honors by the Denver Post on Sunday.
Three seniors Ashley Goletz and Rachel Romine from Central High School and Grand Junction High Schools Elaina Arrieta along with Fruita Monument junior Brooke Williams and Central sophomore Mikayla Duffy received honorable mention on the Class 5A team.
Its the second time Romine and Duffy have been honored. Earlier, the Rocky Mountain News voted Romine as a 5A first-team infielder. Duffy earned honorable mention.
Goletz, a pitcher, completed the year with a team-high 91 strikeouts and three no-hitters in fashioning a 8-1 regular season record; she also hit .418 with three homers.
Romine led the Warriors with a school-record nine home runs with 36 RBIs and a
.536 batting average. Duffys 2008 ledger includes a perfect game, two no-hitters and a team-low 0.54 earned run average in 52 innings pitched. At the plate, she hit .509 with two home runs and 24 RBIs.
Arrieta, while handling the bulk of Grand Junctions pitching duties, led the Tigers with 18 RBIs. Her .367 batting mark was among the teams leaders.
Williams, a two-year starter at third base for Fruita Monument, led the Wildcats in nine batting categories. This season, Williams hit .472 with 25 hits and an equal number of stolen bases to go along the three home runs and 21 RBIs she hit.
Three additional Western Slope softball players were also named on other Denver Posts all-state teams. Meeker resident Alisha Rodebaugh, who plays for Rifle High School because her school does not field a softball team, and Tiffany Schaff of Delta High School were listed among the Class 4A honorable mention awardees.
Basalt High junior Alexa Aitkin was selected to the Class 3A all-state first team as an outfielder. Her Longhorns teammate, Jamie Matherly, a sophomore, earned honorable mention.
All seven of the regions all-state honorees have been invited to play in the annual Western Slope All-Star Classic. That game will take place on May 20 at Mesa State Colleges softball stadium.
