Larry J. Rasmussen died Oct. 8 at St. Marys Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 14, 1934, in Sanford to Willis (Bill) Rasmussen and Gladys (Morrison) Rasmussen. Larry spent his early years in the San Luis Valley and attended schools in Sanford, La Jara and graduated from high school in Monte Vista in 1952. Larry played basketball, football, baseball and track. After high school he moved to Denver to start his career in real estate. While in Denver he met and married the love of his life, Clare Jean (Nash), on Sept. 11, 1955. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage.
After living and working in several other locations, in 1991, Larry and Clare moved back to Grand Junction,where they had lived previously and where Larry sold real estate and was elected as president of the Mesa County Association of Realtors. He was also active with the Chamber of Commerce. In 2003, while enjoying semi-retirement, he was the governmental affairs liaison for the Homebuilder Association.
Larry is survived by his wife, Clare; daughter Sonya Rasmussen of Palisade; son Jay of Delta; and daughter Myrna Smith (Mike) of Tulsa, Okla. He is further survived by eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; brother Lloyd of Rio Rancho, N.M.; sister Colleen Mortenson of Sanford; and many nephews and nieces.
Preceding Larry in death were daughter Sandra Jean; and his parents, Willis and Gladys Rasmussen.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Road in Grand Junction. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Please join the family for a reception immediately following the services at First Presbyterian Church, 3940 271/2 Road.
In lieu of flowers, Larry requested donations be made to the American Heart Association, 123 N. Seventh St., Grand Junction, CO 81501, or the American Cancer Society, 2754 Compass Drive, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
