Pineapple Crackers, a Hawaiian-flavored reggae band, performs tonight at Mesa Theater.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Hawaiian reggae band Pineapple Crackers pulls out all the stops for their big annual show at Mesa Theater and Club, said singer and guitar player Paul Roach.
Well have some fun visual effects on stage with us, Roach said.
Ukulele player and lead singer Benson Broyles brings a Hawaiian flavor to the band, a style he adopted from his native Hawaii.
Pineapple Crackers takes traditional Jamaican reggae songs and gives them a Hawaiian twist. The band also covers pop songs from groups like Led Zeppelin and Weezer, and gives them a reggae beat.
The group also writes a lot of their own music.
Tonight, you can expect to hear about 60 percent of original material and 40 percent covers the majority coming from Hawaii.
Which means people will probably only recognize 10 out of the 30 tunes, Roach said.
The band also includes drummer Danny Odam and bass player Ray Pellegrini.
The four musicians, whove been together about four years, met one another at Mesa State College, where they all graduated with music degrees.
The local rock band Riverseed will open tonights show.
