GRAND JUNCTION Collbran Republican Laura Bradford hopes the course of the House District 55 race has taken a turn following Thursday'e endorsement of her candidacy by the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce.
Bradford said her phone rang all day Thursday after the endorsement, which she takes as a sign that things are looking up for her campaign against incumbent Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction.
I have the toughest race in the state and Im a newcomer and I have a steep uphill battle, Bradford said. I think there were a lot of people waiting (for the endorsement). I think theres going to be a flurry of activity in the next four to five days.
Bradford, who owns ProSafe Products in Grand Junction, said she would focus on fending off issues for small businesses as a legislator, such as mandated health care and payroll increases, rather than proposing new laws if elected.
Buescher has served in the House since 2004 the same year the Chamber named he and his wife, Mary Beth, citizens of the year. In 2008, he sponsored and passed bills to aid the local wine industry and Downtown Development Authorities and make it easier for out-of-state companies to buy planes from Colorado.
The Chamber has endorsed a straight party ticket in local contests. The chamber will support incumbent Republicans Janet Rowland and Craig Meis for Mesa County Commissioner and Rep. Steve King, R-Grand Junction. King is running unopposed. Rowland will face Democrat Dickie Lewis and Meis will take on Democrat Dan Robinson in November.
