GRAND JUNCTION — Allen Grabe shot his son in the face as the boy slept in his bed late last Thursday, according to allegations in an arrest warrant affidavit.
“I had to kill him because you were ruining him,” Allen Grabe allegedly told his wife, Jaquette, according to an arrest affidavit.
Allen Grabe, 51, was formally charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death, in the shooting death of 13-year-old Jacob Grabe at the family’s Pear Park home.
Arrest records in the case were unsealed Wednesday morning.
“Mrs. Grabe said she could hear gurgling sounds coming from Jacob’s bedroom,” the affidavit said. “Mrs. Grabe said Mr. Grabe went back into the bedroom and she heard multiple shots again.”
Jaquette Grabe said she had no idea why her husband shot their son.
“Mrs. Grabe did disclose several financial stressors which came into Mr. Grabe’s life within the last week, but advised Mr. Grabe has never been physically or emotionally abusive to either her or Jacob.”
Deputies who were called out to the family’s home at 3045 Wedgewood Dr. around 10 p.m. last Thursday, reported finding Allen Grabe sitting on the front porch of the home, clutching a revolver.
He was ordered at gunpoint to drop the weapon.
Allen Grabe set the weapon on the ground and said, “I give up.”
He declined to be interviewed by investigators.
Debra Meeks, a friend of the boy’s mother, told deputies she was on the phone with Jaquette Grabe from around 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. — they had a “normal conversation” and then heard a “pop.”
Meeks said she clearly heard Allen Grabe state “I shot him.”
“Ms. Meeks said Mrs. Grabe then appeared to become highly upset and she heard Mrs. Grabe say, “no, I love him.”
Meeks heard two more shots before the phone line went dead. Meeks said Jaquette Grabe had disclosed “some financial pressures” on the family over the past two weeks.
Jacob Grabe lived with a mild case of autism, Asperger’s syndrome. Grabe was an eighth-grader at Grand Mesa Middle School and played the French horn in band, according to an obituary.
A family relative described the Grabes as devout Christians who regularly attended a small church in Whitewater.
The Jacob Grabe Memorial Fund has been established through Alpine Bank — donations will be taken at any Alpine location.
Allen Grabe is being held on $1 million bond at the Mesa County Jail — he returns to court Nov. 28 before Judge Brian Flynn for a preliminary hearing.
