CLIFTON More than 3 million people belong to Golds Gyms throughout the world, and the company sees potential to expand on that membership in the Grand Valley big potential.
Two months after opening the doors on its 57,000-square-foot Grand Junction gym, one of the largest in the country, the company announced plans to open the doors on a new Clifton location next July.
General Manager Chris Howington is excited about being in the area and sees potential for growth in the Grand Valley.
The potential is here because the demographic, the people are here. Also, the people are very active they like to workout. A lot of people came out and supported this. They said we gave them what we promised, so I think the support will be there for our second club too, said Howington.
Howington, a Boise, Idaho, native, is extremely happy to be in this market and came to the Grand Valley with plans already in place to construct two Golds Gyms. The success of the Grand Junction gym only helped expedite the process.
When we came into town we knew we wanted to have two (gyms) here in Grand Junction one on each side of town, said Howington.
The new facility, located at 3229 I-70 Business Loop, will be a scaled-down version of the Grand Junction gym. At 42,000 square feet, it is still a sizeable location and will feature most of the things featured at the Grand Junction club. This includes cardio-cinema, racquetball, basketball, machine weights, free weights, juice bar, yoga, spinning, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, dry sauna and personal training.
Howington explains the few changes found in the smaller Clifton club.
There will still be a 25-meter lap pool, the basketball court is only going to be a half court instead of a full court, and were only doing two racquetball courts instead of three, Howington explained. When you walk into it, its going to seem like the same. Just on a smaller scale.
The Western Slope is known for its varied amount of outdoor activities, many of which are only short drive away. With such a large group of healthy, athletically oriented people in the area, the Golds Gym brand was an instant hit. This is not a fact lost on Howington, who recognizes the high activity level of residents of Grand Junction and the surrounding areas.
When we brought the brand here to Junction we had a lot of people who were very happy to see a major brand come in and very happy to see where we were going with it, he said. When we did our pre-sale over off 25 Road they had a little peek of what we were going to do. Its the same thing well do in the Clifton area.
The Clifton gym will follow in the footsteps of the Grand Junction facility and conduct a pre-sale of its own.
Beginning Nov. 1, Golds Gym will open a small, 4,000 square-foot cardio and workout area. This will be located a few buildings down from where the Albertsons renovation is taking place. According to Howington, the temporary facility will give people who join the Clifton gym a place to workout until the main facility opens.
Howington expects that the new facility will add 40 to 50 new jobs in that market.
Golds Gym isnt stopping in Clifton. Howington said that there are plans for a total of three or four gyms on the Western Slope. No word on when or where, but be on the lookout for Golds to appear in other towns across western Colorado.
