As Dr. Pramenko recently pointed out in his Free Press column, doctors have an increasing problem with Medicare payment cuts. The problem falls on us as patients too. It is becoming more difficult to find a primary care physician ... correction ... its nearly impossible to find a doctor with only a Medicare card. I found one and had to get a supplementary insurance as soon as I could, to keep receiving the care I needed. Medicare just doesnt get it done anymore.
Dr. Pramenko stated, ... patients will have to understand that there will be greater limits to publicly funded health care like Medicare. That tells me my Medicare card is isnt worth the ink thats printed on it.
Doctors do not intend to decline in quality care. Its just getting harder and harder to obtain it, and it is time to do something about it!
Write a letter to Josh Penry about the problems Medicare is causing from one end of the Valley to the other. Send a copy of it to John Salazar and Bernie Buescher. Sure, they are aware of some Medicare problems, but they havent heard from their constituents en masse on the issues that plague the Western Slope. Sure, the problem is everywhere, but we live right here! If they get enough of our letters it might began a movement that would cover the whole United States ... seep into Washington, D.C., and wake up some big wigs.
I think that more than $50 a month is paid by Medicaid so that I can say I have Medicare. Thats not a whole lot, but it is the governments chosen amount. It is a fraction of what wholesome insurance premiums cost a lot of people, but it was meant to be the older folks insurance, along with Medicaid, paying doctors what Medicare did not. Somewhere along the line Medicaid decided not to pay certain charges. Along there, some people lost Medicaid and was left only with Medicare ... and a prospect of obtaining some other insurance that doctors would accept. Most of us know those who can not do that.
So do the letter writing thing and fill up the mail bags to our representatives in Denver and their offices here in Grand Junction. Talk to others until its a loud buzz that fills our streets. It will take some action among a lot of us before someone steps up and some changes are made!
