GRAND JUNCTION — Blues, rock, funk and soul, with perhaps a touch of reggae, comes to Grand Junction Saturday night when the Johnny O. Band takes the stage at Boomers.

The band has toured Europe twice and also performed at festivals including the Denver Blues and Bones Festival, the LoDo Music Festival, Janus Jazz Aspen at Snowmass, the Carbondale Mountain Fair and the Crestone Music Festival.

The Johnny O. Band has also shared the stage with and opened for such artists as Jimmy Vaughn, Buddy Miles, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, the Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks and Rebirth Brass Band.

Johnny O. is John Ohnmacht, a native Coloradan who’s been playing music for the past 20 years. His former band, Band du Jour, toured nationally and internationally for six years. He played guitar for a year for another Colorado band, the 12: BarFlies, before forming the Johnny O. Band.

The group’s drummer is Marion Edwards, whose drumming and singing career dates back to 1965. During a 10-year period in New Orleans, Edwards backed up artists like Gatemouth Brown, Irma Thomas and Harry Connick Jr. After moving to Colorado in 1987, Edwards cofounded a group called Diana and the Big Time.

The band’s most recent addition, bass player Ian Anderson, hails from Kingston, Jamaica, and has toured internationally with a number of prominent reggae acts.

Boomers owner Carson Cross said the band has performed at the nightclub three times in the past five-and-a-half years.

“He’s very good. He added a little bit of reggae to his lineup last time. It sounded good,” Cross said.

The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.
