One reason many people live in Mesa County is for the recreational opportunities the area offers.
The area has become a destination for mountain bikers, dirt bikers, hikers and horseback riders from all over the country and world.
Many of the miles and miles of trail system that these outdoor enthusiasts enjoy are the result of the hard work of many area residents who have dedicated their time over the years to develop those trails.
Last week was a prime example of volunteers coming together to the benefit of the entire community.
Three local groups, the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association, the Backcountry Horsemen and the U.S. Forest Service joined forces to build the new flowing Park Trail on Grand Mesa.
The groups developed about 15 miles of new singletrack trail that can be used by mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders.
Next time you’re hiking or riding on the new trail near Land’s End Road, enjoying a view of the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre Plateau in the distance, know that the trail you’re walking on comes courtesy of hardworking volunteers.
And if you’d like to see more similar trails developed in the area, know that locals groups doing the work are always in need of more trail lovers willing to pitch in by picking up a shovel.
