Skimming reports spike

GJPD said Wednesday they’ve received 40 reports of “skimming.” Using a small, portable card reader, a thief swipes the magnetic strip on someone’s’ credit card, stealing the info from that card. Since February, losses have totaled nearly $150,000 from 40 people in GJ. In all cases, victims presented cards for valid transactions, and the suspects “skimmed” info from the cards. The suspects then made a counterfeit card. Report all card fraud to the FTC's Identity Theft Hotline at 877-ID THEFT (438-4338) or online at www.ftc.gov.

Play with lighters?

The GJFD now know what caused Tuesday’s fire at 503 23 Road. Using a lighter, a 16-year-old boy ignited foam insulation on a flat bed trailer. The fire dripped down to the ground, igniting the vegetation below, and traveled to a wood pile and other structures. The boy was released to a parent, and charges are pending.

Truck knocks line down at Palisade Town Hall

A U-Haul truck Tuesday reportedly backed into a lamp post at the parking lot of Palisade Town Hall, 199 E. Third, which knocked over an electrical line in the process, said the MC sheriff’s office. The driver is unknown and crews were called to gather live electrical lines.

A resident requested extra patrols for speeding in the 400 block of Dike Road.

Excessive alcohol use

The MC Coroner’s Office determined George Luis Gonzales, 47, whose remains were found Tuesday near the CO River, died of intracranial bleeding due to an accidental fall. Chronic alcohol abuse, alcohol intoxication and cirrhosis are significant contributory factors, the MCCO said.
