Fire bans in several counties
BLM on Wednesday announced an open burning ban on land in Mesa, Eagle, Garfield counties. Campfires are allowed only if theyre in designated fire grates in campgrounds. MC also adopted the same restrictions on private land. Dont be fined $100,000. Info: 244-3401 or 244-3900.
Arts benefit from $
The CO Council on the Arts gave away more than $1.3 million in grants to agencies throughout the state. Here in MC, money went to: GJ Commission on Arts & Culture, $10,500; GJ Musical Arts Assn, $6,500; GV Public Radio Company, $8,750; and W.CO Center for the Arts, $9,100. Info: (303) 892-3802.
Anglers rejoice
Jerry Creek Reservoirs are now open. They were closed last year for construction. The reservoirs are catch-and-release, using artificial flies and lures only. Float tubes are allowed with waist-high waders, but anglers are not allowed to wade in the reservoirs. Info: 242-7491.
Cops say money available for National Night Out
Deadline for applying for grant monies through GJ Police Department for National Night Out is July 25. The event is Aug. 5, 7-10 p.m. Organizers can receive up to $250 for events and apply for permits to close streets during the events. Info:

A woman in the 500 block of 33 Road reported someone throwing fire crackers into an animal pen and scaring the animals.
Statue stolen in front of Talleys
Someone walked away with a silver statue from in front of Talleys in downtown GJ. The statue, titled WSC, by Mark Oeser, is valued at $3,500 and was reported missing Saturday. Anyone with info on the theft can call MC Crime Stoppers at 241-STOP, or (800) 221-STOP and get cash for info.
Uranium project proposal
BLM in GJ is taking comments on a proposed uranium mine reclamation project south of Gateway. A proposal from Nuvemco LLC to remove a rock stockpile containing approximately 7,500 tons of low grade uranium and vanadium ore. Permits have been obtained from MC to haul the ore on MC roads 510 and Z 2.4 to CO Highway 141 for a period of one month. Info: 244-3077.
Rotary elects new officers
Dale Beede is the new president of the downtown Rotary Club of GJ. Joe Warner is the new president-elect. Other board members for the coming year are: Secretary-treasurer Gay Hetland, Claudia Crowell, Jana Gerow, Ed Hokanson, Kevin McChesney and Nancy Stalf. Kirk Rider is past presidents representative on the board. Walid Bou-Matar of GJ is the new district governor of Rotary International District 5470.
