Bless this house

Habitat for Humanity of MC will bless its 40th home at 6:30 p.m. today at 2849B Kennedy Ave. Owners must put 500 hours of “sweat-equity” into their home, and they are given an interest-free loan. All money goes into a revolving loan to fund other homes. Info: 255-9850.

Well hung

New art will be hung Tuesday at GJ City Hall. The art will come from Darlene Merkel, Mary Mansfield, Sharon Bradshaw, D.B. Cooper, Karie Hiam, David Kennedy, Steve Miller, Robert J. Parker, Clarice Poplett, Tom Poplett, Marie Reed, Norm Seay, Noelle G. Smith, Dale Taylor and Kathleen Wilkinson.

Curious George’s safe

This morning, Museum of W. CO. and MSC historians plan to excavate a safe that had been owned by one of the founding fathers of GJ and MC, George Crawford, but which is now buried beneath Colorado Ave. at Sixth St. Excavation starts at 9 a.m. Info: 242-0971, X215.

911 calls 911

GJ firefighters were called around 10 a.m. Thursday on a report of the smell of something burning at Grand Junction’s 911 Dispatch Center, 625 Ute Ave.

Starstruck at Highline Lake

The W. CO. Astronomy Club is hosting a night of star gazing at Highline Lake State Park, Saturday, June 28. Meet at the East Boat Ramp, 8:45 p.m. The club will have at least two telescopes at the park. A park pass, $6 for the day, is required. Info: 858-7208.

Man drives over graves

Woodrow Bryant, an adult, was arrested Wednesday after allegedly driving over several monuments at Memorial Gardens, 2970 North Ave., MC Sheriff’s office said. Damage estimated over $1,500.

Tools lifted

Crime Stoppers needs help finding who took $10,000 in hand and power tools from locked trailers near I-70 and the Redlands. Between June 16-19, locks were cut off trailers. Report the crime, be anonymous, and get $1,000. Call 241-7867 or 241STOP.com.

Wild horses

BLM offers 35 mustangs and burros for adoption Saturday, June 28, Montrose CO Fairgrounds. This includes 30 mustangs under 5 and some that have been halter or saddle trained, and a few burros. Registration will be June 27, 5-8 p.m. and June 28, 8:30–10:30 a.m. Silent bid adoption will be June 28, 10:30–11:30 a.m., Minimum bid of $125 for untrained animals.

MSC grad Leah Hickman is raising money to help Africa. She’s hoping lots of people will partake in a half-marathon and 5K in Gateway July 5, 7:30am. $40.

Independence Day climb

The MC sheriff’s technical rescue team is gearing up to host its 19th annual climb to the top of Independence Monument on July 4, inside CO National Monument. You can go too, for $125, by calling Kris Hjelle 245-8513, Bob Smith, 640-0771.

Be a derby-dude, dude

Who doesn’t like the sounds of a roaring engine followed by the sound of crushing metal? If being in a head-to-head competition exhilarates you, then join the demolition derby at the MC Fair. Donate your unwanted car to Operation Interdependence through Vehicles For Charity. VFC will pick up your car, truck, jeep, ATV, snowmobile w/trailer, jet ski w/trailer, RV, motorcycle or boat. How to handle PTSD

Three seminars on post traumatic stress disorder will be held at the GJ VA hospital July 9, 16 & 23, 5:30 – 7pm in bldg. 6. Open to the public but will focus on informing veterans, their family members, friends and clergy about symptoms of PTSD and its effects on veterans and those close to them.
