Lawrence D. Capps

June 4, 1915 - June 20, 2008

Lawrence D. “Larry” Capps, 93, of Grand Junction died Thursday, June 20.

Mr. Capps was born in Wellsville, Kan., on June 4, 1915, to George W. and Carolyn L. Capps, one of six children. Lawrence’s family moved from Kansas to California, then in 1928 to Fruitvale, where Lawrence entered the seventh grade. The next move was to Fruita where he graduated from Fruita Union High School in 1933. For two years he attended Ross Business College in Grand Junction. At 19 years of age, he began a long association with the Bureau of Land Management.

In 1942, Lawrence served in the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific on the USS Denver.

Lawrence married Florence Osborne in Ouray in 1937. She preceded him in death. Florence had one son by a previous marriage, Dr. Charles M. Gillit, who died April 10, 1968. Survivors include his stepgrandchildren Dr. Gary Foster and Terri Foster of Loma Linda, Calif., Gina Foster of New York and Ginger Shullanberger of Rockford, Ill.; brother Merle Capps of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Lawrence returned to Grand Junction with Florence to run his father’s paint store located at 316 Main St. After a few years he added high quality furniture and gifts. The new Capps Furniture Store was a great success, grew, moved to Sixth and Main, then to First and North Avenue. In 1983, Lawrence sold the store, moving to a previously purchased beach home in San Clemente, Calif. After five years he and Florence moved back to Grand Junction due to Florence’s failing health. He lived at Horizon Towers, Florence at Heritage Homes. Florence died on Jan. 30, 1998.

In April of 1997, Lawrence came out of retirement to reopen Capps Furniture with Judy Smith of Dove Interiors. He started Willow Brook Bed and Breakfast. He resided at The Commons and continued to stay involved at the Grand Junction Visitor’s Center.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 25, in the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel. Cremation preceded the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado at P. O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
