GRAND JUNCTION — Longtime jazz guitarist Jerry Hahn performs tonight in the KAFM Radio Room at 1310 Ute Ave.

Hahn is best known for his contribution to the “fusion movement” in the 1960s and 1970s.

“It’s basically where you take jazz-influenced melodies and put a rock beat to it. Fusion is mixing two types of genres,” said Hahn from his home in Wichita. “Miles Davis did some of that.”

Hahn began playing guitar at age 7, and at 11 was playing professionally with the Bobby Wiley Rhythmaires, appearing daily on Witchita’s television station KEDD.

At 21, Hahn moved to San Francisco, where he joined the John Handy Quintet in 1964 and recorded two albums, including “Live at Monterey.”

“It was a great place to live in the ’60s before real estate went through the roof,” Hahn said. “It was a fertile place to be at the time.”

In 1968, Hahn played and recorded with the Gary Burton Quartet with Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow, and toured the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan.

In 1970, Hahn formed the Jerry Hahn Brotherhood and toured, performed and recorded for Columbia Records.

The Brotherhood band took blues and country music and performed it as jazz musicians, Hahn said.

Tonight Hahn will play solo, and mainly jazz standards, as well as cuts from his new album “Hahn Hymns.”

“I’ve taken melodies, traditional hymns, and reharmonized them and play them like jazz tunes,” Hahn said.

Hahn has been recording his own music since 1967, as well as performing with other artists, including Paul Simon’s first record, Hahn said.

“His blend of jazz, blues and country riffs on the guitar are quite literally the stuff of legends,” said Radio Room manager John Anglim. “KAFM is especially proud to welcome one of the major influences of contemporary jazz guitar.”

Hahn has taught music in many places over the years including Wichita State University, where he established a jazz guitar degree program. Hahn moved back to his native Wichita four years ago where he continues to teach part-time.
