Longtime Montrose and Delta County-area resident Ralph Frank Scheetz died Monday, May 12, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 100.

On March 15, 1908, Ralph was born the son of Edward J. and Martha Ann (Dorei) Scheetz in New Elmo, Kan. His family moved to the Delta/Montrose County area when he was 3 years old. Ralph graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic School in Delta.

On Sept. 26, 1933, Ralph married the love of his life, Mary Caroline Schmalz, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with nine children and over 48 years of love and marriage.

Ralph was a carpenter and farmer for many years before his retirement. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed going fishing, dancing, hunting, and he loved to read. More importantly, Ralph loved his family and will be missed by the many lives that he touched.

Ralph is survived by six sons and their wives: James (Jearee) of Marysville, Wash., Anthony “Tony” (Barbara) of Delta, Allen (Roxcie) of Orchard City, Philip (Linda) of Delta, John (Pat) of Amarillo, Texas, and Bill Scheetz (Delores) of Lafayette. He is also survived by two daughters, Mary Lowe (John Hanley) and Loretta McCarty (Dwain) both of Delta; brother Raymond Scheetz of Grand Junction; and sister Sister Mildred Scheetz of Chicago. Ralph is further survived by 48 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Scheetz; and son Robert Scheetz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ralph’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel. A rosary will be recited by John Hanley at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Henry Aguwa presiding. Interment will follow at Delta City Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
