GRAND JUNCTION — An eyesore to the community and a vacant beacon for pigeons and mischievous teens for many years, the old Ultronix building at 2150 Grand Ave. is now gone, torn down by its new owner, Mesa County School District 51.
In March, the district bought the 48,000-square foot, vintage 1962 building for $1.5 million, said district Spokesman Jeff Kirtland.
“It’s a public nuisance,” Kirtland said. “The neighbors are very happy we’re tearing it down.”
The district will eventually build an administration building to replace the Basil T. Knight Center on Patterson Avenue and the Hawthorne building at Ninth and Ute. Those buildings, along with the district’s administration building at 2115 Grand Ave., now house various components of the district’s administration.
“Long term, we would likely sell BTK and the Hawthorne building,” Kirtland said. The district has no timeline.
Demolition began last week on the building and ended Wednesday afternoon.
As the final steel girders and insulation were pulled from the building, pigeons circled above.
“It appeared the pigeons living in it seemed a little displaced,” said Kirtland.
