One dead in wrong-way I-70 wreck

A motorist died Monday after slamming head-on into a minivan driving the wrong way on Interstate 70.

Grand Junction police officer T.J. Rix said the victim — driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo eastbound on I-70 — died after the vehicle was hit by a Dodge Caravan which had entered eastbound traffic, headed west around 1:23 p.m.

The Caravan apparently entered I-70 at the 24 Road exit, going the wrong way, Rix said.

The collision happened around mile marker 28.

The driver killed in the Monte Carlo had not been identified through late Monday afternoon. Rix said a small child was extricated from the wreck and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital.

The female driver of the Caravan was also taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Eastbound traffic on I-70 was closed over two miles and expected to stay that way until at least 6 p.m. for investigation.

Rix on Monday afternoon said it’s “too early to tell” if drugs or alcohol were factors.
