GRAND JUNCTION — From a short distance, Dan Loge’s paintings of various wildlife appear extremely realistic. Up close, however, you see broad strokes, as opposed to fine detail such as the separate hairs of an animal.
“I’m more concerned with strong designs in my paintings,” Loge said. “I like to see the brush strokes instead of painting them out of existence.”
Some people call it impressionism, Loge said. He calls himself “painterly” — using a combination of impressionism and realism.
Frame Works and Gallery, 309 Main St., will open its first major art show tonight with a reception for Dan Loge.
Loge specializes in oil landscapes, and particularly wildlife scenes. He paints his pictures from photographs he’s taken while in the backcountry.
“I do a lot of my photos here and at Rocky Mountain National Park,” Loge said. He also travels to Jackson Hole, Wyo., to photograph moose or “whatever happens to show.”
But he never copies a photo. Instead, he incorporates an animal into another landscape.
Loge has painted for 27 years and has artwork exhibited in about eight galleries around Colorado. His work is also shown at the Steven O’Brien Fine Arts gallery in Boston.
“I have a great deal of respect for what Dan does,” said Frame Works owner Rob Kurtzman.
Tonight’s opening will include music by Loge’s son Steve and fellow guitarist Steve Kilcrease.
The opening coincides with the downtown Grand Junction Art and Jazz festival.
