Grand Junction, take the uniforms out of storage because you’re back in the state baseball tournament.
Due to Legacy’s use of an ineligible athlete in both of their District 5 tournament games last weekend, Grand Junction and Lewis-Palmer high schools will play at 4 p.m. today at Lakewood’s All-City Field to determine the final team in the Class 5A State Baseball State Championship Series.
The unique qualifying game came about after Legacy High School discovered it had played an ineligible athlete. The school forfeited those games.
“It is unfortunate that this had to happen, but there is enough time remaining to establish an alternative team for the state tournament,” Colorado High School Activities Association Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann said. “The two teams playing were both involved in the same district tournament and both lost to Legacy, creating the need to play-off between the two teams.”
The winner will advance into the Team 5 slot and play Dakota Ridge at 12:30 p.m. Friday at All-City Field in Denver for its first game in the CHSAA’s double-elimination format. The loser is eliminated from future play this season.
Other teams qualifying for the 5A State Championship Series include: Cherry Creek, Dakota Ridge, Air Academy, Arapahoe, Rocky Mountain and Chaparral.
