Janine Kirkland and Brittany Moon made it official.
In winning a playback match over Grandview’s Hannah Truppo and Dani Beis, the Fruita Monument No. 2 doubles team created a bit of girls regional tennis tournament history Friday.
Their come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory made it the first time since 1998 all three area high schools who field girls tennis teams have advanced players to the Class 5A state tennis tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday in Boulder. First-round opponents will be released by the Colorado Activities Association this afternoon.
Grand Junction qualified for state in all three singles divisions and all four doubles brackets. Central will send four players to the big show.
The Tigers also took home the regional team title with an event-best score of 78 points to runner-up Grandview’s 48. Fruita, with 35 points, edged Central by a point for third place.
Mandy Johnson became the Warriors’ first state qualifier in Central head coach Steve Tyler’s three-year tenure at the helm when she secured her berth a second-place finish to Grand Junction’s Kirsten Schulte in the No. 3 singles tournament. Joining her at the state tournament will be her No. 2 singles teammate Cyndle Curfman and the Warriors No. 4 doubles team of Jenna Cruz and Kelsey Slone.
Schulte earned one of five regional individual titles earned by the Tigers had to rally from a first set 4-6 lost to Johnson to win her match. After falling behind early in the second set Schultz powered her way to identical 6-4, 6-4 wins over Johnson for the title.
“I just got used to how she hit,” Schulte said of the shift in the match. “We played two times before (this season), and they were both really tough matches. This one I just had to buckle down and get the job done.”
Grand Junction’s Jenny Jessup defeated Curfman in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to become the region’s top No. 2 singles player. Betty Lou Booz with her playing partner Samantha Weinburg took the No.2 doubles match 7-5, 6-3 over Kirkland and Moon.
Liz Heaps and Maddie Hayduk raised the Tigers’ double champion win streak to three when they downed Jenny Rains and Desina Enelianova from Grandview 6-1, 6-3. Brittany Frugate and Alex Proyette completed Grand Junction’s run of the doubles tournament with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 victory of the No. 4 doubles championship match over Central’s Cruz and Slone.
