When play resumes this morning for the second day of the Class 5A girls tennis regionals at the Elliott Tennis Center at Mesa State College, there will be a lot of familiar faces gunning for a chance to advance to next week’s state tournament.
As of press time Thursday, five of the seven championship matches involve a local player.
The No. 1 singles match pits Charlotte Mooney of Grand Junction against Lauren Gryzbowski of Grandview. Mooney advanced to the title match on a 6-2, 6-3 semifinal victory over Durango’s Jessica Wilson after drawing a first-round bye.
Gryzbowski, Grandview’s only singles player to advance to the championship match,
won two matches in a weather-impacted Thursday that caused a 90-minute delay due to early morning snow.
Players from Grand Junction and Central will square off in the Nos. 2 and 3 singles championships.
Central’s Cyndle Curfman moved into a title showdown with Jenny Jessup of Grand Junction on straight set wins over Katie McGovern of Fruita Monument 6-1, 6-1 followed by a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Grandview’s Amanda Kelleher.
Jessup, the division’s top seed, defeated Jill Kennedy of Monarch 6-2, 6-0 in her only match of the day.
The Tigers Kirsten Schultz battles Mandy Johnson of Central in the No. 3 singles championship tilt. Johnson advanced on back-to-back victories over Jennifer Zieutarski of Grandview 6-1, 6-3 and a straight set win against Fruita’s Andi Kirkland.
After drawing a first-round bye, Schultz downed Highlands Ranch’s Erica Gallo 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Players from Fruita and Grand Junction will tangle for the No. 2 doubles crown this morning. Janine Kirkland and Brittany Moon of the Wildcats face top-seeded Betty Lou Booz and Samantha Weinburg of Grand Junction.
On an adjoining court the Tigers’ Audrey Keenan and Alyssa Behrens play the sister combination of Rachel and Mary Lanaghen from Monarch for the No. 1 regional doubles title.
