Aaron Burk has found his spot on the baseball field. As the designated hitter for Grand Junction, the sophomore’s prowess at the plate has helped the Tigers build a 16-2 record to date.
And more importantly, it was a factor in the team’s taking sole possession of first place in the Southwestern League on Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Fruita Monument.
Last week, in a SWL contest at Montezuma-Cortez, Burk had his best day of the current season.
In the span of the mercy-rule shorted 22-9 Tigers win over the host Panthers, Burk rapped out three doubles and hit a home run in a perfect 5-for-5 effort.
The performance earned Burk the vote as the Gene Taylor’s Sporting Goods Prep Athlete of the Week. Honorees are selected by the staff of KTMM (1340 AM) radio throughout the current prep academic year.
Winners are interviewed as part of the radio station’s “Time Out” program on Thursday and are profiled in Friday’s edition of the Free Press.
In addition, weekly awardees photos are placed on the sporting goods store’s “Wall of Fame.”
