GRAND JUNCTION — Rapidly approaching the midway point of the current prep track season, a number of local individuals have begun to establish themselves as top competitors in specific events.
On the day, eight local individuals earned first place honors in Friday’s nine-team Phil Wertman Invitational meet at Stocker Stadium.
Holly Odneal of Palisade High School and Grand Junction’s Herman Gutierrez each posted the fastest low hurdles mark in their
Odneal took the girls 100 hurdles by coming in at 15.99 seconds, bettering runner-up J.J. Johnson of Fruita Monument by .26 seconds. The Bulldogs junior also won the girls high jump.
Gutierrez zipped to a 15.32 victory over Central’s Devon Moore in the boys low hurdles.
Moore recovered from the loss to Gutierrez by posting the best mark in the boys the triple jump. His leap of 41-feet-7 1/2-inches inches was well ahead of event runner-up Brian Ivy from Moffat County, who recorded a mark of 41-4 3/4.
Central’s Nolan Curtis had the best time in the boys 400 meter dash, clocking in at 50.27.
Area runners dominated the boys 800 meter run. Fruita’s Jon Carlton won the event in 2:3.18 as the front end of a local one-two-three sweep.
Martin Medina of Grand Junction, with a time of 2:03.55, was second, some four-plus seconds ahead of Central’s William Hyde.
Bernadette Pitre of Palisade, with a mark of 33-2 3/4, won the girls triple jump by 1/4 inch over Glenwood Springs’ Theresa Gabriel.
Continuing the area’s success in field events, Fruita Monument’s Rachel Draper won the girls shotput with a throw of 34-feet-2 1/4 inches. The mark was more than 2 inches farther than runner-up Myiah Bengston of Moffat County. Kami Utu’s 33-8 toss earned the Wildcats senior third place.
Glenwood Springs won both meet team championships. The Demons’ total of 163 points surpassed second place Central by nine points in the boys meet. In the girls meet, Fruita, with 157 points, was a distant second to Glenwood, who totaled 182.50 points.
