Grand Junction, CO Colorado
GRAND JUNCTION A few paces from the heart of the Mesa State College campus and a quick run across 12th St. is a tiny white home more than 100 Christian youth call home for at least an hour a week.
The Christ Center at 1235 Kennedy Ave. is a three bedroom house used by eight campus ministries for dinners, bible studies and hanging out. Things can get a little packed in the 1,000 square foot home. But Christ Center Executive Director Leslie McAninch hopes to spread out soon in a 5,450 square foot building on the corner of 12th St. and Bookcliff Ave.
The land for the Christ Centers future location has been donated, as well as nearly $600,000 to help build the $1.018 million building. Donations have come in quickly through word of mouth and area churches, and McAninch hopes fundraising will be complete as soon as this fall.
The new two-story Christ Center will house a coffee shop, library, meeting rooms and a kitchen. And its not just Christians or college students that are invited to use it.
Its going to be a cool place where people can get a good cup of coffee, have some good conversation and feel embraced, McAninch said.
The Christ Center, which moved into the Kennedy Ave. building in 2004, was pretty much empty for the first two years of its existence, said Darrin Crow, director of one of the campus ministries that uses the center, Christian Challenge. The past two years of using the center have been good, but the next several years in the new building will be even better, said Crow.
The new place is going to be neater and nicer. Its going to be a place where youre going to feel good about inviting people there, Crow said, referring to the additional space at the new location.
