Gene Taylor's Prep Athlete of the Week
Diligence to improve earns Central's Martin weekly honor
Print Comment
Not satisfied with her putting after Monday’s second-place round at Adobe Creek Golf Course, Melissa Martin was determined to improve that aspect of her game.

“I went out to Lincoln Park and worked on my putting for two hours,” Martin said in an KTTM radio interview Thursday.

The results of the extra practice were evident when the Central senior returned to Lincoln Park for Tuesday’s Bulldog Invitational.

Martin dominated play, concluding the 18-hole tournament with a individual-best round of 75. Her score helped the Warriors win their second tournament in as many days, along with being a mere 10 strokes better than Martin’s nearest competitor, Whitney Rahm of Fruita Monument.

The effort earned Martin the nod at this week’s Gene Taylor’s Sporting Goods “Prep Athlete of the Week.” The award is chosen by the KTTM (AM 1340) staff and is announced Thursday throughout the high school sports season as part of the radio station’s “Time Out” program.

Weekly honorees appear in Friday’s edition of the Free Press. Additionally, each weekly winner has his or her photo placed on the sporting goods store’s “Wall of Fame.”

Tuesday’s winner was the first for Martin in the recently started 2008 prep girls golf season. This week, she and the rest of Central’s team are scheduled to play at back-to-back tournaments at Bookcliff County Club Monday followed by Tuesday’s Warrior Invitational at Tiara Rado Golf Course.

While Martin goal is focused on winning the girls individual Class 5A state title in May, she is just as high on Central qualifying as a team for the two-day, 36-hole championships in Littleton.

“That would be fantastic if we got the team there,” she said. “I think we have the potential to do really well at regionals and at state.”
