GRAND JUNCTION — The conditions surrounding high school girls golf change every day. Melissa Martin pointed that out in describing her game at Tuesday’s Palisade Invitational.
“My strengths change from day to day,” she said after shooting an event-best 75 to capture the tournament’s individual medal.
“Today probably my lag putting was the best. I was always pretty much leaving (the ball) close the hole and able to make a second putt most of the time,” Martin said with a chuckle.
And this event was a laugher for Martin.
The Warriors senior bested runner-up Whitney Rahm of Fruita Monument by 10 strokes and bested third place finisher, Grand Junction’s Jordan Fellhauer, by 13.
The weather at Lincoln Park Golf Course was warmer for the eight-team field versus Monday’s Wildcat Invite at Adobe Creek in Fruita. Yet, the downtown Grand Junction nine-hole muni course was unkind to all participating golfers. Martin included.
“We got funky bounces and some of us couldn’t putt very well,” she said. “It’s winter weather, and the courses are not in good shape. So that makes it difficult.”
Despite the difficulty most of the field’s scores improved.
Martin chopped five shots off Monday’s 79. Marquez, who took fourth at 87, bettered her Monday score by three strokes. Fruita’s Whitney Brofos improved her Wildcat Invitational score by two shots Tuesday.
And so on. And so on. And so on.
In the team standings Central won its second tournament in two days. As a unit, the Warriors’ 260 bested Fruita by 14 strokes. Grand Junction, who had two golfers finish among the top 10 individuals, was third at 285. Host Palisade, who came in at 313, tied with Delta for fifth overall.
After taking the rest of the week off, the Western Slope prep girls golf tour resumes Monday at Bookcliff County Club then goes to Tiara Rado Golf Course for the final event of the two-week, four-tournament swing through Grand Junction Tuesday.
