GRAND JUNCTION — They are undefeated. Outscored their opponents 74-36. And have scored no less than 11 runs in any game while fashioning a seven-game winning streak.
Yet, Grand Junction, feels they have not reached the level of baseball they want to be at.
“We just need to get better every day and keep progressing. Because that’s the only way we can reach our goal of becoming state champions, ” said Tigers’ outfielder Bubba Higgins after Tuesday’s 10-0 mercy rule shortened victory over Unitah, Utah.
While there’s more than two-thirds of the season left to play and the Southwestern League schedule ahead, Grand Junction has ratcheted up their game this year.
Junior Geoff Baldwin in his first start of the season pitched a two-hitter against the overmatched Utes. After retiring the first three batters he faced, the Tigers responded by tacking up two quick runs in the bottom of the first.
Baldwin aided his own cause with an RBI single to score Joe Arnold.
Higgins scored the second run on Unitah catcher Colter Christenson’s error.
The 2-0 lead turned out to be plenty for Baldwin who allowed just four baserunners in the game.
But, scoring two runs is a mere pittance to the Tigers offense.
After going scoreless in the second, Higgins whacked the first of two base-clearing triples in the third as part of a three-run rally.
Not satisfied with a 5-0 cushion, Grand Junction scored three more times in the fourth. All three runs came on catcher Ross Koepsell’s long home run over the left field fence.
Higgins and Koepsell forced the early stoppage with back-to-back RBI base hits in the sixth.
Warriors breeze to 5-1 win
Central gave up an early run to Unitah in the first half of a three-team doubleheader at Suplizio Field.
But, the Warriors responded to the 1-0 deficit after the second inning by putting up five runs in the fourth to earn their second win in as many games and raise their overall record to 4-3 on the year.
Brandon Jamison earned a complete game win while holding the Utes to four hits along with pounding out two extra bases hits. Outfielder Adam Hesse homered as part of Central’s eight hits.
Central hosts another nonleague opponent in ThunderRidge Saturday at Suplizio Field.
