Tigers’ No. 2 golfer wins top spot at Wildcat Invite

GRAND JUNCTION — Jordan Fellhauer has no idea who Lou Gehrig is. But the Grand Junction High senior possibly had the biggest achievement by a No. 2 player since Gehrig replaced then-starter Wally Pipp as the New York Yankees first baseman 80-plus years ago.

Slipped into the No. 1 slot by Tigers girls golf coach Kevin LaDuke, Fellhauer’s play at Monday’s Wildcat Invitational well made up for the loss of Brittany Berguin, who was off enjoying the final day of spring break.

Playing on a cold, brown, damp Adobe Creek Golf Course, Fellhauer shot an event-best individual score of 78. The mark was just enough to beat last year’s Class 5A individual runner-up Melissa Martin of Central by one stroke.

That alone is enough to hinder a golfer’s performance. But Fellhauer had another problem to battle throughout the day.

“(Play) was really slow,” she said. “We had to wait like 15 minutes for a shot because other golfers were in front of us as well. It was rough. It kind of messes up me because I get to thinking how good or how bad I’m doing. So I had to focus and take one shot at a time.”

Using the extra moments to compose herself Fellhauer fashioned a great round for herself.

“I was actually was really pleased with my performance,” she said. “This was the first time I’ve ever shot in the 70s. For not playing over spring break I’m really pleased with what I did.”

A strong front nine put Fellhauer in a good mood. “I was playing amazing,” she said.

The next couple of holes were harder. “I was just freaking out for a little while,” Fellhauer explained. “Then I started playing good.”

Good enough to defeat Martin, whose 79 would win most events on the Western Slope girls prep tour. Another surprise popped up on the individual leaderboard when Glenwood Springs’ Michelle Stripp carded an 81 — good enough for third place and runner-up in the team competition with a 271 to event-champ Central’s 263.

“I’m not terribly surprised because Michelle has worked all winter long inside,” said Glenwood coach Kathy Whiting. It was the third time in as many events the Demons finished second in the young season. Earlier, in tournaments held in Montrose, Glenwood lost both events by a combined five strokes.

Whitney Rahm had the best score among Fruita Monument players with a fourth-best mark of 83. In the team standings, the Wildcats shot a combined 276, five shots back of Glenwood and six better than Grand Junction, which finished fourth with a 283 mark.

Palisade, which will host today’s Bulldog Invitational at Lincoln Park, was seventh out of eight participating teams at 324.
