Amy Kame returned to Central High School’s lineup and helped spark the Warriors to a 65-57 win over Grandview Saturday to stay alive in the Class 5A girls state basketball playoffs.

The victory moves the No. 4 seeded Warriors (19-4) to a Sweet 16 road matchup against No. 1 seed Highlands Ranch (21-3) in the Sharon Wilch Region Thursday.

Kame, who was forced to the bench for the final three games of the regular season with a stress fracture to her leg, scored 13 points. The sophomore was one of three Central players to have 10 or more points in the game.

Senior guard Alaina Brennan got the Warriors off to a good start, scoring nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter, in which Central took a commanding 15-4 lead.

The early bulge Central had taken served them well as the game progressed. Grandview, using a balanced scoring attack, recovered and outscored the Warriors in the next two periods to narrow the deficit to 40-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Central took advantage of numerous free-throw opportunities in the final stanza to seal the game. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors converted 11-of-18 free throws for half of their 22 points in the period.

Kame and Brennan had the bulk of the action from the line. Kame sank 5-of-8 free throws. Brennan was 3-of-6 from the stripe.

The outcome was not as bright for Grand Junction on Saturday. The Tigers were eliminated from the tournament on a 83-56 loss to the Wilch region’s No. 2 seed, Horizon.

The Hawks (18-6), who next take on Denver East, put Grand Junction in a bind quickly by scoring 22 points in the first quarter to the Tigers four points.

Horizon outscored Grand Junction in all four quarters.

Nikki Trujillo led all scorers with 23 points. Horizon’s sister duo of Breanna and Meagan Malcolm-Peck had 18 and 11 respectively. A fourth Horizon player, Cheara Medina, added 10 points.

Senior Kershel Claussen led Grand Junction with 14 points. Fawn Brady and Brittany Berguin had 11 each. Lisa Hughes finished with 10 points.

The Tigers ended the season at 9-14.
