GRAND JUNCTION — Central High School senior Conor Felletter won the highly-competitive Senate II category at the Colorado Grande National Forensic League District meet last weekend in Pueblo.
The win propels Felletter to the national competition in Las Vegas in June.
Felletter was one of only five from the weekend’s meet that will go to nationals, which places him “in that elite company by winning his highly competitive Senate, earning the majority vote of his peers along the way,” said Central Speech and Debate Team Sponsor Tony Bichler.
More than half of Central’s competitors at the tournament received recognition, and as a team, Central placed second.
Seven state qualifiers from the team will head to Chaparral High School in Parker in two weeks for the state championships, and the entire team will regroup for the other national qualifying tournament in Cañon City on April 4-5.
The district meet drew more than 100 students from schools from Grand Junction to Durango to Colorado Springs and Pueblo to the Eastern Plains. The district includes 39 high schools.
At the district meet, the students debated the merits of student-written legislation for ten hours for one of five available slots to nationals.
Other results are: Max Bonning and Nicole Silvano, super session finalists and presiding officers; Ana Orozco, nomination for top speaker; and Brianna Whitrock, nomination for top speaker.
