Come rain, snow or sunshine, a number of people will be out for a round of golf next Saturday disc golf that is.
Every year disc golfers around the world hold tournaments during the month of February for two reasons: To encourage people to play disc golf in the dead of winter and raise money for charity.
The 10th annual Grand Valley Disc Golf Club Ice Bowl takes place in Palisades Riverbend Park Feb. 9 starting at 11:30 a.m. Club member Bill Alderman expects 75 to 100 golfers to show up to play one round of 27 holes.
Last year we had the largest number of juniors throughout the whole country who played, said Debbie Laity, who will be there along with her 10-year-old daughter Sierra Morgan.
Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, combines Frisbee-throwing and golf. Players throw a disc to a target, or hole, which is often an elevated metal basket. As players progress down the fairway, they must make each consecutive shot from where the previous throw landed.
The clubs goal this year is to raise $35,000 for the Food Bank of the Rockies-Western Slope, said club president Rock Cesario.
Several disc golfers braved snow and cold weather Saturday, collecting food and money outside area City Markets.
Donations are also being accepted at Alpine Banks in western Colorado, and at Cesarios Triple Play Records, 530 Main St.
The club is collecting both food and money, although the emphasis is on money because the Food Bank of the Rockies is able to make a dollar go further.
For every $1 a person spends, the food bank can buy four times that amount, because of buying wholesale, Alderman said.
After Saturdays tournament, there will be a party and silent auction at Palisade Brewery, 200 Peach Ave., in Palisade. Proceeds from the auction also go to the food bank.
Items to be auctioned include cabinets, microwave ovens, blown glass, ski passes, a pair of tickets to a Drive By Truckers concert in Aspen Feb. 22, a 30-minute helicopter ride across the valley, a 500 mile radius plane ride, and more.
The band Wheel will perform at the brewery, where people will start gathering around 5 p.m.
Anyone is welcome to participate in the Ice Bowl tournament, including newcomers to the sport. Discs can be purchased at The Cash Company, All Sports Outlet and Triple Play Records. A few will be available for loan that day as well.
