Those who grew up or went to college in Grand Junction during the 1970s and 1980s will likely remember Hughie, Dewey and Louie — a trio of young men who had been playing in bands around the valley since they were teenagers.
In the ’70s, Hughie, Dewey and Louie were regular acts at a lounge called The Flamingo.
Where Pita Pit is now located, there was a college hangout called the Pretzel Factory, where 3.2 beer was served and 18-year-olds could come.
“That was a great gig,” said Hughie Plumleigh.
By the 1980s, the group’s main venues were Double R Bar and Bar X.
The group broke up in 1986, but the three continued to perform over the years either solo or with other bands.
Twenty years later, they’re back again as Hughie, Dewey and Louie. The group performs Saturday at Boomers.
Hughie, who learned to play piano by ear as a kid, still plays and composes music that way. Dewey (Ted Dussor) plays guitar and Louie (Richard Smith) is the drummer. All three sing.
Dussor replaced founding member Malcolm Mitchell, who moved on in 1975.
Along with some original tunes, the group performs a lot of music from the “’80s on back,” Hughie said.
You can expect to hear songs from The Cars, The Fixx, Talking Heads and the Rolling Stones. The group may also perform Beach Boys, Beatles and Dire Straits songs.
“We do a few of everybody,” Hughie said.
So how they did they get that title?
When the group landed a regular gig at The Flamingo, they still needed a name.
One person suggested Tom, Dick and Harry. “Someone else said Hughie, Dewey and Louie,” a name that stuck, Hughie said.
Hughie expects to see some of their 1980s fans Saturday at Boomers. He also expects Boomers to become a regular gig.
“That’s what we are — baby boomers,” Hughie said.
