Eclatant is French for “bright, brilliant, dazzling, radiant beauty,” and it’s also the name of the opera ensemble performing tonight for the Western Slope Chamber Music Series.

The Front Range ensemble is billed as a mix of “operatic drama, sassy musical theater, and favorite love songs in one elegant package.”

“They’ll be doing a nice mix of lighter opera — more romantic arias — and music from popular musicals. Musicals are always fun,” said Tyme Mientka, codirector along with his wife, Kathryn Mientka, of the chamber music series.

Songs will include music theater favorites from “Wicked” as well the balcony scene from “West Side Story.”

Soprano Amy Anderson, tenor Rick Patterson and pianist Deborah Schmit-Lobis will perform opera classics including excerpts from “La Boheme” and “Traviata.”

They will be moving around a lot, connecting with the audience, Mientka said.

Also, before each song Schmit-Lobis will talk about the aria, giving a brief storyline about the opera.

“Opera’s theater, it’s music, dance, it’s everything,” Mientka said.

Andersson and Patterson have performed with companies like the Central City Opera, Kansas Opera and Passaggio Opera.

As an opera pianist, Schmit-Lobis has worked with performers such as Luciano Pavarotti.

Tonight’s 7:30 concert will be held at the Canyon View Vineyard Church in Grand Junction, 736 24 1/2 Road. Eclatant performs again on Saturday in Paonia at the Blue Sage Center.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door for adults, and $5 for students.

Tickets are available in Grand Junction at Roper Music and the Canyon View Vineyard Church, and at Paonia Farm and Home, Hardin’s Natural Foods in Hotchkiss, and Bill’s Music in Delta. Tickets are also available at the door.

“There’s nice lighting, a good sound system. It’s a wonderful program, and a nice way to spend a Friday evening,” Mientka said.
