You might want to catch Bobby Walker before he heads south — that’s south Texas — for the winter.

Walker will perform at Boomers Saturday night to celebrate the release of his new self-titled CD — a compilation of recordings made over a span of 15 years throughout the South, Southwest and West, from New Orleans to Austin, Texas, and Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., to Vacaville, Calif.

“It’s rootsy, kind of Americana, a whole potpourri of what I’ve been into around the country,” Walker said of the music that fills the CD.

Joining Walker Saturday night will be Paul Schneider on saxophone, Steve Williams on bass and an Austin, Texas-based drummer named Justin.

Walker is a multi-instrumentalist who’s performed professionally since the 1960s. He plays percussion, guitar, keyboard and harmonica. A native of Detroit, most of his musical career has been spent in California, Colorado and Texas.

Walker spent 15 years playing rhythm and blues in the San Francisco area, where he moved in the 1980s.

After performing a few other Colorado gigs this winter — in Denver, Lyons, Steamboat Springs and Grand Lake for New Year’s Eve — Walker will head for Padre Island, Texas, to play for a while.

“There are friends I play with in San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Dallas,” Walker said. “The south Texas scene is extremely hip. It has its own musical culture down there.”

Half of the new compilation CD is original material, including Walker’s “Detroit Boogie,” which won honorable mention in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest five years ago.

Asked if he’ll be playing it Saturday, Walker said, “I might, I could.”

So if you want to hear it, just ask.

Other Walker songs, like “Delta Man,” have been used in films, Walker said.
He’s currently working on a new CD that will feature all original material.

The new compilation CD is a “composite of the past so I don’t have to trip on the past,” Walker said.

The Boomers show will be Walker’s last live performance in Grand Junction until next spring or summer.
