Big wins by Central, Palisade raise post-season hopes

Grand Junction, CO Colorado

GRAND JUNCTION – Central and Palisade made big strides toward securing post-season berths with victories on Tuesday.

A 2-1 win by the Warriors over Montrose at home gives Central a three-game lead over Fruita Monument, their closest rival in the hunt for the two available Class 5A state playoff spots open to Southwestern League teams.

Freshman Haileigh Higgins broke a scoreless tie three minutes in the second half on a pass from teammate Kaselyn Butters. Montrose tied the game at 1-1 in the 65th minute with an assisted goal from Rachel Hansen.

Forward Ashley Paul, on Butters’ second assist of the contest, scored the game-winner with three minutes left to play. Warriors goalie Savannah Moore had eight saves.

Central (5-2-0 league, 7-3-0 overall) holds a three-game, second place lead on Montezuma-Cortez and has a chance to overtake first place Durango with three games left in the regular season.

Palisade improved its outlook on securing the fourth and final available Class 4A playoff spot with a 2-1 victory at Rifle.

The Bulldogs (5-6-1 Western Slope League and overall) overcame the Bears’ first half lead on goals from Mackenzie Ciard and Lindsey Yaetes. Both Palisade scores came in the second half. Goalie Amelia Davis stopped seven of 13 Rifle shots on goal.

The Bulldogs, currently hold a half-game lead over closest rival Delta County for fourth place. Both schools have two regular-season games left on their respective schedules.

Palisade hosts Eagle Valley this afternoon at the Peach Bowl, then travels to Glenwood Springs Saturday. Delta hosts Rifle then wraps-up the year at first place Battle Mountain.
