Something shakin’ on Shakedown Street

There’s a band out on the highway. They’re high-steppin’ into town.

As Deadheads know, you can find lyrics from just about any Grateful Dead tune to apply to any situation in life.

The line above comes from “The Music Never Stopped,” which also offers the most fitting lyrics for Saturday night, when the Colorado Dead cover band Shakedown Street plays the Mesa Theater and Club.

People joining hand and hand, while the music played the band — Lord, they’re setting us on fire.

Because, as with most improvisational rock‘n’roll — and even more so with the Dead and Dead cover bands — the band doesn’t play the music. The music plays the band.

And, as is the case with Shakedown Street, they’ll be setting you on fire.

There’s a plethora of Dead cover bands across the country, but Shakedown Street has been at it for 19 years and in the process has garnered a national reputation as being the mother of all Dead bands.

Shakedown Street has performed a number of times with former members of the Dead, including keyboardists Vince Welnick (with the Dead from 1990-95) and Tom Constanen (68-70) and Bob Bralove, the Dead’s longtime sound designer.

Shakedown Street has also played with and opened for Hot Tuna, the Jerry Garcia Band, The David Nelson Band, Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band, Spirit, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Jerry Jeff Walker, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Arlo Guthrie, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and many others.

Band members have come and gone over the past 19 years, but the music has remained, actually getting better with each show. In fact, Shakedown Street considers the current group and the music they’re playing — rather, that’s playing them — to be their hottest ever.

The band still includes original member Ted Galloway (guitar, vocals) from Manitou Springs, David Recker (guitar, vocals) from Evergreen, Joe Weisiger (keyboards, organ) from Denver, Trevor “Bones” Davis (drums, vocals) from Salida and Jim Allard (bass, vocals) from Denver.

So make like the do-dah man and truck on down to the Mesa theater and keep on dancin’ till the daylight, greet the morning air with song.

OK, so the Theater can’t stay open that late, but ...

Don’t tell me this town ain’t got no heart.

You just gotta poke around.
